The Lakewood Ranch Community Foundation is proud to announce that one of our recent grantees, Local Relief, was featured on television today. This innovative non-profit, founded by Heather Hackett, is a mobile app designed to be a crucial resource for communities facing natural disasters. Connecting Communities in Times of Crisis Local Relief serves as a dedicated social media network and resource hub, offering a streamlined platform for information and assistance before, during, and after a disaster strikes. The inspiration for the app came from Hackett’s personal experiences with hurricanes in Florida, where she identified a critical need for a centralized and reliable source of information amidst the chaos. A Central Hub for Reliable Information The app effectively combats the spread of misinformation and information overload commonly seen on mainstream social media during emergencies. By focusing on trustworthy resources and localized information, Local Relief ensures that users have access to the most accurate and relevant updates for their specific area. Empowering Volunteers and Streamlining Aid A key feature of Local Relief is its ability to connect volunteers with those in need. The app facilitates the donation of time, money, and supplies, making it easier for community members to support one another in a coordinated and effective manner. Adapting to Community Needs Local Relief is a constantly evolving platform. Learning from events like Hurricane Ian, the app has been updated to categorize information into specific areas such as family services, social services, and free legal aid, ensuring that it meets the diverse needs of the community it serves.
